Two soldiers were killed and three others injured when the soldiers confronted heavily armed sea robbers in Rivers State on Wednesday.
Spokesperson of the Operation Delta Safe, Abubakar Abdullahi, confirmed the incident in a statement made available to journalists on Thursday.
‘Operation Delta Safe’ is the codename for the military exercise targeted at curbing the activities of sea pirates, oil vandals, and all kinds of criminality in the Niger Delta region of the country.
Abdullahi said in the statement that “troops deployed at Creek 6 Houseboat Cawthorne Channel while responding to a distress call of sea robbers attack around Ijawkiri general area engaged heavily armed sea robbers.
“Unfortunately, two gallant soldiers exhibited highest point of patriotism by paying supreme price, while three others sustained gunshot injuries.”
The spokesperson said that efforts are ongoing by the Joint Task Force to apprehend the criminals.
The statement also added that the soldiers destroyed 13 illegal refineries also in Rivers State.
“In continuation of its drive to accomplish its mandate, troops of Operation DELTA SAFE on patrol around Iyalama Adama axis of Rivers State, yesterday discovered and destroyed 13 illegal refineries,” he said.
He however said that no arrest was made.
